dAi (digital-Art-index)
research project / New Forest edition

The dAi (digital-Art-index) is an “collection” of historic paintings held in regional galleries featuring different locations that frame one place, in this instance the New Forest National Park. Aesthetics aside, each of the paintings holds a wealth of information, from identifying plant types to rural living conditions, offering us an opportunity to look to the past, to be able to positively inform what might happen in the future. –– Dr Melanie Rose

The dAi (digital-Art-index) is the creation of artist Melanie Rose. It is a method of place based research, an artwork and a curatorial project taking the form of a spreadsheet. It is also intended to be a resource to put older works in conversation with contemporary concerns and/or current artist practices.

dAi (digital-Art-index) - New Forest was realised as part of Rose’s Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Leeds Arts and Humanities Institute (LAHRI) supported with a BA Leverhulme research grant to investigate the relationships between UK regional art collections and National Parks.

In September 2024 dai was activated by the exhibiton Long View(s) which featured contemporary artist works paired with historical artworks in the dai collection as part of The Long View conference.
